this raccoon is HUGE and we have been feeding this cat for a week, in the hopes to adopt it, but we just recently found out about the raccoon. should we capture the raccoon in a have a heart trap and re- locate it? please give suggestionsHow do I feed a stray cat when there is a raccoon also eating the food and possibly eating most of it?
I agree with the best course is taking the food in when you go to bed and putting it back out in the morning (raccoons won't come past 5-5:30, which is still dark for nocturnal cats). A plant stand or something to set it on that raccoons won't climb on or knock over is also possible -- although there are cats that can't jump, too, so it's kind of a case by case situation. Scare away any non feline critters of course -- if they don't leave or are otherwise acting erratically it is very possibly means rabies -- so don't let it discourage stray cat care, but DO be careful! ...How do I feed a stray cat when there is a raccoon also eating the food and possibly eating most of it?
We live in the countryside and there are two stray cats that we have been feeding outdoors for about 5 years now, and they are routinely outside around raccoons that also visit, and there has NEVER been any issues at all.
Raccoons are for the most part, quite docile and unaggressive unless you corner them and threaten them. Often one of the raccoons will arrive while the stray cat is eating the dried cat food on our porch, and the raccoon will just wait until the cat is finished, or if the raccoon is impatient and starts to come to close to the cat, the cat will give a warning hiss and the raccoons just backs back down a few porch steps and waits. Raccoons are not cat killers.
Our stray cats usually appear for food in early morning and mostly during day light hours, so i would also suggest that if you only want to feed the stray cat, and not the raccoon also, then you should only leave out the food during the day, and that should solve your problem.
Never Ever.....feed cats outside if you have raccoons around....Ever, you c raccoons are a very high risk for disease not only bad for the cats your trying 2 feed but for you and your family. Do everybody a favor try and get rid of the cat, maybe bring it to a friend to live outside there house so that you can call animal control and get the raccoon picked up. This is a problem that should not go ignored. Good Luck
I had woods out behind my house, and I was feeding a feral colony. I was sitting on my deck one night after the cats had eaten and gone off, and here came this big ol' raccoon lumbering up the lawn to the little bit of leftover food. I shouted, I waved my arms, I shined a flashlight in his face, and all he did was look at me like I was stupid! I couldn't scare him off!
I started feeding the cats earlier in the day so that all the food would be gone before night, that's when the coons come out. Worked out fine for me. Never had any trouble out of that coon.
I don't recommend trapping it yourself. Raccoons are extremely vicious animals when they have to be. You could release it only to have it turn on you. A coon can kill a pack of dogs. If you desperately want this coon gotten rid of, try to locate somebody in your area that specializes in relocating wild animals. Your shelter, animal control, or police department can probably direct you to them.
If the only problem you have with it is that it's eating your cat's food, feed the cat in the morning and remove any uneaten food in the evening, so the coon won't have any reason to come around. Good luck!
Believe it or not I just realized I have the same problem. I'm getting a humane trap Monday and going to try to catch the raccoon and give it new home in some near by woods.
Now the cat. I made a spot on top of a counter (outside) and putting food up there for the cat. The sides are vinyl so the raccoon can't climb it, but the cat can jump it. I think it's working. I sprinkled some flour all around the stand and the only foot prints that I've seen is cat tracks. So....... That's what I'm doing. Just an idea.
Raccoons forage at night so put the food out during the day. We put a cat door in our garage so other animals couldn't get to the food we left out. The door can be very small because cats are capable of fitting in little spaces like that.
Don't forget to leave out water all the time. The summer months make homeless cats sooo thirsty.
Hi
No Let the raccoon eat too. I have raccoons and possums stealing the strays food. The cats do come first
Cats will come at regular times If you can feed him in the day, raccoons won't come as they are nocturnal
If you know what time the cat comes at night, put the food down in front of him
..... I WOULD RE-LOCATE the raccoon and if you are going to keep the cat try to get him in the house and feed it.... also try to feed it when the raccoon is not around..they usually come out when it is dark.. also if you do keep the cat have it spayed or n
well my suggestion is that put the cat somewhere the raccoon wont be...or wont find the cat...also i think it is a good idea to relocate the raccoon...nd adopt the cat so u can feed it inside ur house lol =]
Maybe take the cat inside and feed it and let it back out?
let it inside in a room with all the doors closed and feed it, then let it back outside!
