There is a creature in my attic scratching at night.. I think it may be a raccoon. How can I get rid of it??
if it were a racoon you would have to have a fairly large hole somewhere where it got in. find it and patch it, but racoons sleep during the day so I would be careful if I were you. Can't see it being a coon though, as they would only come in if there were food to be had somewhere.
Likely it's not a racoon at all but a mouse. Scratching sounds louder when it's coming from inside a wall or an attic. put some mouse bain somewhere near where you heard the scratching, or set a trap. Mouse bain works better though, cause they eat it and dry up and die. There is a creature in my attic scratching at night.. I think it may be a raccoon. How can I get rid of it??
It is possible that it's a raccoon. But more likely it's a squirl. They are most commonly found on roof tops, and are masters of chimney duct work. Find a really strong smelling spray like Lysol or Clorox spray. Then give the attic a few nice sprays through a small access gap. The odor will be to much for the animals strong sense of smell. Then give the animal some time to leave on there own the way they came in. Remember not to use to much spray, and to locate there entrance hole and block it off when it is believed the attic is empty. There is a creature in my attic scratching at night.. call the animal control. they will come and get rid of it. my bf had one in his back yard that was not very nice and they had to call to cops and they came over and took care of it
Try to find out what they eat...and leave a little path towards the door, so it'll ghet out
give it a 30 day eviction notice :)
How brave are you? Hardware stores carry large ';live'; traps that let the animal in, but not out. Of course then you have to remove the trap with the animal in it. I'm not that brave - so I called my local wildlife and fisheries office - a very nice guy came out and set the traps for me and I called him when I caught our creature of the night - he came back and removed the traps for me - while I hid downstairs. Good luck, Sis
Call in the specialists........you dont know what the animal is and you dont know if its Rabid.....be careful....call around for quotes from your local animal control specialists... some wild animals can be quite vicious...be careful dont attempt the removal alone.. L.Butler
put mothballs up there when it is away
The simple solution is to set off a bug bomb in the attic and go outside and watch where you think they got in. If they don't exit within a few moments of setting off the bomb, then they are on a food gathering trip so you can be sure it is ok to seal up the hole or other access. They will try hard to damage or remove what ever you put there because they have food stored inside your attic so be prepared by making sure the hole cover is good and solid.
Good luck and please don't kill the animal. They deserve to live on this earth too!
its a qhost...tell it to go towards the light
Call the exterminator, and also have him check where he thinks the animal got there. If u have rats you will have many more.
Sounds pretty likely. Call your local animal control. If they can't help you they should be able to tell you who can. Whatever you do, don't poison the animal. It will die in the attack and the smell will last forever....PHEW.
Had the same problem. I live trapped them and took them about 10 miles away.
Putting a radio up there and leaving it on works.
Apparently constant strobe lights is the way to go, I just didn't have one.
You better get them out soon, the ones in my attic did serious damage to my soffits and had their babies up there. Try and find out where they are getting in, they are very tricky.
Let me tell you, it is a little scary sticking your head up in the attic the first time when you know they are up there.
This type of problem is best handled professionally, otherwise you risk damage to the attic and/or the animal(s) dying up there where they can't be removed. This webpage describes the trapping process for different animals in the attic:
www.wildlife.pro/how-to-trap
Havahart is the name of a company that make humane traps for animals (there are several other manufacturers -- search humane traps).
Put the trap in the attic baited with a piece of bread with peanut butter.
In the morning you will have a raccoon waiting for you! Contact animal control and find out how to dispose of it (don't let it go in the front yard as it will crawl back in your attic).
If you have nut trees by your house, I am betting it is squirrels. I don't know how to get rid of them, sorry.

Are motorized vehicles a raccoon's only natural enemy?
The only ones I see dead who don't appear to have died of natural causes, are the ones splattered on, or at the side of the road. Are motorized vehicles a raccoon's only natural enemy?
One time I had a baby raccoon hanging out on my porch swing. He was really cute; we named him Ricky. My roomie called animal control and they told her that raccoons were nocturnal and he would leave once it got dark. That night I peaked out to check, and Ricky was curled up in the recycle bin snoozing. A couple days later he disappeared. I'm sure his mom came and got him. I'm glad he left before that baby raccoon pelt appeared in our gutter. I'm sure that would have been traumatizing for him.
Oh so I won't be violated for chatting, how about Coonhounds and pioneers? I'm sure they don't use road kill to make their coonskin caps. Are motorized vehicles a raccoon's only natural enemy?
Thank you YAF. if you liked that story, I've got a million of them.
Shotguns?
they make a good stew
How can a motorized car be a ';natural'; enemy? Natural enemies would be cougars and bears and things like that.
Here in the concrete jungle it is definitely cars.
i hate those rabies infested critters. we have a lot of them here in Ohio. they are HUGE!!! yea...i gotta say gun or cars or even coyotes.
oh i love raccoons!
they actually have ALOT of enemies..
Man!
vehicles
owls ( will prey upon young coons)
so will coyotes
bears, mountain lions,
most dogs will try to kill a coon.. Ive heard of the coons putting up a pretty good fight sometimes.
of course dogs will kill a baby coon.
No..there are also things like coyotes, wolves,etc...
I saw one get attacked by an Alligator (Florida), but he got away.

Is the panda bear really a part of the raccoon family?
i heard that on saturay and i was just wondering if it was true.Is the panda bear really a part of the raccoon family?
No, at this time they are classified as bears and the red panda is classified into a group that includes raccoons, however, it's clear that this is still in a state of flux because even the genetic evidence is contradictory. if you'd like a more in-depth but interesting read, try http://www.fathom.com/feature/122661/ind鈥?/a>Is the panda bear really a part of the raccoon family?
I believe you're thinking about the Red Panda.
It's a species of bear. Check the link for tons of info.
It is neither a bear nor a raccoon, although closer to the latter. Pandas are in the family Aeloropidae. Bears are in the family Ursidae. Raccoons are in the family Procyonidae. All are in the order Carnivora.
No. The Giant panda relates more to the bear family (discovered through genetic testing rather than just looking at it) than the raccoon family.
No. You can find more information about them at the San Diego Zoo and the National Zoo.
On a stuffed panda I bought at the San Diego Zoo, it says that the panda is a catlike mammal.
It is part of the bear family from what I've read on the internet.

Having trouble finding rap artist that wears a raccoon hat in his video?
The song is really chill, and the artist just sounds like he is talking in the video. The video is of the rapper (i think) and he starts off wearing a racoon hat with black horn rimmed glasses i think, then he just keeps walking to the right and there is like a outfit progression. At the end of the video he is doing the like rockin out hand motion... I saw it on mtv i was hoping someone might be able to tell me the song or the artisHaving trouble finding rap artist that wears a raccoon hat in his video?

Will our pet raccoon return home, He escaped his enclosure?
Our pet raccoon Robbie, got out last night and has been gone a day now. He was raised by us since his eyes opened, and he managed to escape his enclosure. He is 1 yr old, and very tame. Will our pet raccoon return home, He escaped his enclosure?
YOU CANNOT KEEP WILD ANIMALS AS PETS YOU DIPWAD.
he escaped because he realized that being kept in a cage all day was not were he belonged.
he did not escape, he went home. Will our pet raccoon return home, He escaped his enclosure?
It depends on a lot of factors. If he has been raised as a pet, he might not have any fear of humans or other animals that may hurt or kill him, so he might not come home. He might not be able to.
I hope that you realize that keeping a wild animal as a pet is illegal. Even in states that allow pet raccoons (and NOT every state does), you are not allowed to keep a wild raccoon. You must purchase one form a USDA breeder, or from a store or dealer that got it from a licnesed breeder.
If your wild raccon bites someone while it is roaming around, the health department will capture it and kill it to test it for rabies. Even if it comes home, and you continue to keep it (illegally), if it bites someone, it will be confiscated and killed. Also, your homeowners insurance will not cover any damage or injury caused by a wild animal in your possession. If it bites someone, the person it bites can sue you.
The very best thing you can do for this animal if it returns is to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and surrender the animal. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a> or here: http://www.wildliferehabber.org/
This is what you should have done when you first found it.
Licensed wildlife rehabilitators have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and they have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released. They know how to recondition an animal that has been raised as a pet so that it can live a wild existence again, and be returned to its proper environment.
yes he will. if you guys were feeding him large amounts regularly, he will remember we he got fed and he will return.
leave bowls of food in you yard, no too close to your front door,
prefferably in a darker area.
this happens to me.
i caught my raccoon with a flashlight and a quarter because she had a broken leg.
but contact me and tell me how that works out for you.
