How do I get rid of a raccoon that keeps coming up on our deck?

It climbs the stairs up to the second level out where I like to sit outside in the evening. It can be pretty startling. We've already called animal control once, but the little guy keeps coming around. We don't have food up there, either. How do I get rid of a raccoon that keeps coming up on our deck?
My husband got rid of a nuisance oppossum by renting a humane trap. It's a wire cage that you bait with food. When the racoon goes in for the food the trap door shuts and he can't get out. You can then take the cage to a wooded area away from your home and easily release it. The traps are not expensive to rent - or you can buy one for about $30. We rented ours from a do-it-yourself pest control company and I know Ace Hardware sells them in our city. How do I get rid of a raccoon that keeps coming up on our deck?
2-sided tape onto newspaper. Put newspaper on at least 3 steps and top of hand rail. If step onto the tape, newspaper and all tape will stick to its fur. This will not hurt the raccoon but will take plenty of time for him/her to pull all off. This would be a discouragement. Otherwise, call your local city hall for the correct department to get a live animal trap. My city had me pay a $30 deposit and after the trap was returned, they mailed me the $30 back.

If there is one raccoon, there a 2nd. So don't get in too big of a hurry to return the trap after you caught one.
what you have to do is get a wire cage trap; they have a large range of prices, but get a size where the raccoon would fit. All you have to do is bait it, and the raccoon comes in to get the food and can't get out. I learned this from my own personal experiences. If you see a raccoon on your deck, porch, house, etc. , it means it is attempting to get in your attic to build a home. I ended up having to call the animal control to get the raccoon out, and the law forces them to kill them (a dad, a mom, and 6 babies. The cage is generally cheaper, and you can release the raccoon somewhere safer. My cage caught 3 raccoons already, and i am pleased with the results.
This might sound mean but try cayenne pepper. I don't agree with the suggestion of leaving food ANYWHERE because I think you are trying to get rid of him. Cayenne pepper wont have lasting effects but should get the point across. You can also TRY a product called BOUNDRY. It comes in three styles, crystals you shake out of a can, a pump spray and an aerosol. It is generally used to keep pets and other animals out of ';forbidden areas';. We sell it a Bert's Pet Center where I work. Give your local pet store a call and see what they think. Hope this helps.
try leaving some food at the bottom of the stairs for several days and he will figure out there is nothing up there and stop comming up there

urine works. use your imaginatin
