Can a 800 fps air rifle in .22 caliber humanely take down a raccoon with proper shot placement?

I was wondering if I could make a clean kill, aiming for the heart/lungs on a raccoon using an 800 fps Beeman air rifle with a .22 caliber JSB Predator Polymag red tipped pellet???Can a 800 fps air rifle in .22 caliber humanely take down a raccoon with proper shot placement?
A 22 lr or short would be better. Can a 800 fps air rifle in .22 caliber humanely take down a raccoon with proper shot placement?
Pellet guns a great for killing anything you can hit - as long as it's paper. Getting close enough to kill a raccoon with a Beeman, and not have it turn on you, is tricky enough.

When doing it your way you have to be an expert shot with maximum air pressure, close range, and optimum impact. Most likely you are going to end up with a wounded animal that you have to kill some other way.
Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.

Air rifles are not suitable for raccoon hunting. They simply don't have the power. While you might think that raccoons can be taken easily, they're actually very tough. They need a lot more power to be killed, even with a well placed shot. Shooting a raccoon with an air rifle, even one as powerful as the Gamo Hunter Extreme, would most likely just injure it. Then the animal would run away and die a slow, painful death. So don't try it.

Raccoons need a 22 long rifle to be taken down cleanly. You can get a very good semi auto 22 for 150 bucks. This is much more suitable for raccoons. Look at the Marlin 60 or the Marlin 795.
Is it ';possible'; to kill a raccoon with your rifle/pellet combination(22.7ft-lbs), yes, but, IMO that combination is not powerful enough to ensure a clean, humane kill, even with a head shot at close range.

I'm all for hunting with airguns, just so long as a hunter stays within the limits of their rifles capability and their own.

IMO, a .22 lr is the best way to go when hunting raccoon, but if you have a .22 caliber air rifle capable of pushing 32gr(Eun Jin) pellets at a MV greater than 800fps then yes. A .22 caliber air rifle is capable of taking a raccoon if the hunter does his job.

800fps with 32gr pellets = 45.5ft-lbs
I lot of people ask this question I am not a air gun expert but I have been hunting for over 20 years and I can tell you raccoon's are not easy to kill and if you want to take a raccoon humanely then you should stay away from air guns they just don't have the power. If you live in the city like I do and can't shoot a .22 or a shotgun I would trap them in a box trap. You can buy a box trap at most sporting goods store or gardening shop for between $30 and $50.After you trap them call your local animal control and they will pick it up and put right at your door step.
You probably could, but its better to aim for the head, it also depends on the distance. No offense but that one guys a idiot, at 800 fps the pellet will enter the skull, however you weapon of choice also depends on what you want with the pelt, where you live, and so on. A 22 long rifle would work better, however you have to be careful about others (obvious I know but I have to say this)
NO, NO, NO!!! 800fps from a pellet gun will barely kill a squirrel or rabbit and then only if you are within about 10 yards AND penetrate the skull. I've skinned literally hundreds of rabbits, squirrels, birds, and other small animals only to find pellets under their skin (some so badly infected the animal was close to dying) because somebody thought an air rifle would do more than it's capable of.
You dont shoot for the vitals because your pellet gun isn't going to deliver much of a shock wave to disrupt the vitals.. and it might not even reach the vitals at all.

With your pellet gun if you miss and hit the shoulder.. you have an injured coon with a pellet in its shoulder. If using a REAL .22 then the bullet will go right through the shoulder and into the vitals.

Trust me. You are going to quickly find out that your gun is not the best for killing coons even with head shots.
I've taken a few with a strong .177 air rifle. DON'T aim for the vitals though. Pellets won't get very far through the muscle/fat. A head shot within at most 20 yards will do it. Make sure you have some stiff pellets though, nothing that expands much. With headshots, penetration is king. JSB predators are usually great, but I'd go with something stiffer, like Crossman Premiers.

Some of you people don't realize what air rifles can do, nor do you realize that some people can't shoot a .22 in their yard, because they'll get swarmed by cops in about 5 seconds... If it's legal to shoot where you live, buy a .22LR and use that. 500 times more effective.
not likely. racoons are tough little critters. if you try for a head shot, you might put an eye out. the skin is thick and you won't get penetration if you go for a heart shot. something else to consider is: the pellet is going 800fps at the muzzle, as soon as it leaves the barrel it starts slowing down.
there really isn't enough power to actually kill the coon by hitting it in the heat or lungs. The pellet will go in and probably lodged itself there. Which in that case the coon will run off suffering and then die. By hitting it between the eyes it will hit its brain and knock him out.
yes but try to shoot it as close to or in the eye as possible. It is a real soft spot that goes straight to the brain making a humane kill.
you probably could

but you're going to mess up and miss eventually

and cause an animal allot of pain

so i would just use a scattergun

its harder to miss
Yes. However, if possible, you should aim right between the eyes. I take coons like this with a 550 fps .22 all the time.
Definitely! I have an 800fps pelletgun and have shot 6 coons no problem. It works fine.
In theory, sure. In practice, I would step up to 22 wmr
That Should do, if you are 15 yards away aim for the head but if 10 yards away go for the heart.
