If you are looking for more detail than the references already given, then you are going to have to delve back into the deep archives. Comparative anatomy, a favourite subject of natural historians is much more of a 19th century subject than a 21st one, although no less valid or interesting for all that.

Journals such as Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society (All papers from 1665 are online) or Journal of Zoology London, have in their time published lots of papers on the subject and I am sure if you are prepared to search you will find what you want.

Also, a visit to a good zoological museum would be a good place to start, or contact a curator of mammals, who will have good archive records.

More interesting than tapping into a computer keyboard perhaps?
