Skinning coons is tricky. My grandad used to eat them but I don't like the taste it's too oily. Also, there are some scent glands that you have to remove inside the rear legs that will spoil the meat if you cut them. It's been so long I can't tell you where.

Look at the link and follow his advice to not try and remove the head fur as I recall this is tough. When I was like 8 in the 1960s I frequently wore my homemade coon skin cap to school. I think my Mom has pics.

Please understand that these people being ugly are just ignorant, but report them for abusing you anyway.

I'm sorry to hear about your cats. We have a fox problem around my house, they have killed three small pet dogs in the past month, two from the same sweet little old lady. She's really crushed, her Yorkies were her only family. Good job on taking care of the problem. Enjoy your skin with pride.
Reach in through the anus, all the way up. Grab both sets of lips and yank real hard until he is inside out. Scrape away everything down to the skin until he looks like a big, uniflated football.

Let it dry for a couple of weeks. Now reach down the mouth, grab the tail and yank him inside in. Stuff him with sawdust or foam peanuts and sow his mouth and azz up. Pose as desired.
I don't know if you have finished the job yet but if not, be sure to take good care of the meat becasue it is really tasty when it is BBQd. I don't care as much for it roasted, though.

Anyway, here's how I skin one. I hang it by the hind legs so that it is at a comfortable height to work on. I first cut from the pelvis to the throat. Do not go any deeper than the skin. You can minimize the amount of hair that you get on the meat by first cutting a small hole near the pelvis that you can get two finger into. Insert your fingers and hold the skin up away from the meat. Insert the tip of your skinning knife into the hole between your fingers and continue to cut the skin up to the throat while holding the skin away from the meat with your fingers. By cutting from the inside this way, you will not be cutting the hair as you would if you were cutting from the outside as many people try to do. Cut up the hind legs to the ';knee'; area and then cut around the leg at that point. Do this to both hind legs. Using your fingers, pull the skin away from the legs and continue pulling it down toward the head. You may have to use your knife to help separate the skin from the underlying meat. As you get near the chest of the animal, use your knife in the same way that you cut the skin on the hind legs to cut the skin up the inside of the front legs to around the ';wrist'; area. Then cut around the front legs at that point. Next, you will need to cut around the neck of the animal. Keep using your fingers just as I have told you to hold the skin away from the meat. Now, return to pulling the skin off until you have it completely off the animal. Lay the hide out so that the flesh side is up. Cut and scrape away any meat so that alll you have is a clean skin. Sprinkle the skin with a generous portion of a mixture of alum and non-iodized salt. Rub this in well and roll the skin up to allow the salt and alum to draw out the moisture. Change the salt and alum mixture every day until it has drawn almost all of the moisture out. Now is the time to stretch and dry your hide by tacking it onto as piece of plywood. Now, all you have to do is to purchase a tanning kit from Cabella's and tan your hide. an alternative is to brain tan it. You'll have to look up brain tanning on the web to see how it is done. Your only expense will be for a carton or two of calf or pork brains at a butcher shop. I think it is as simple as rubbing the brains into the flesh side of the hide and letting it sit but I've never done it so I'm not sure about that. but I know it is a simple process. If you tan your own hide, there is some work after the hide is tanned because you have to work it back and forth over something like the end of a baseball bat to soften it up

Back to the raccoon, if you want to eat it, and I hope you will give it a try because it is good eating, you will need to gut it and wash it thoroughly in clear cool water. To BBQ it, just rub it with your favorite BBQ rub and put it on the grill to SLOWLY cook. Keep the temp to around 250 deg. If you don't use a dry rub, you can mop a good BBQ sauce on it after it is nearly done cooking. Do not do it before or the sauce will burn and ruin the meat.

Like I said, I don't care for roasted coon. I think the meat has a sort of sweet taste to it that I don't praticularly care for. You may like it, though. Many folks do. When I roasted a coon, I just seasoned it with salt and pepper and put it into a pot and made a pot roast with potatoes, onions and carrots. With a coon the size of the one that you got, you could roast half and BBQ half and see which you prefer.
First of all i want to know why people go to the hunting section to complain about the way we do things.

ok, gut it down the middle and put its insides in a bag, then hang it up in a barn and let it dry out. done
ignor theem fricken hppies dam i hate them but any way you would skin it like a deer if oyu dont know how this is how go up the middle and start at penis or vagina and go up to the chest and go up the legs and the start strechin and pullin and cutin untill only the neck is ther then cut it off and the remove the gut and every thing befrore all of this
take knife cut down middle, take out guts, chop up, cook and eat.
it is easyer to do when they are alive ,

you sneak up behind them and scare them and they jump right out of there skin.
You may want to slit it's throat first and drain all the blood from it's body.

1.Use a dog grooming brush to clean off all of the dirt and mud off it's pelt.

2. Hang the raccoon by its back feet. Some sturdy clothesline or bailing wire works well. The first cut will be just below the pad of the foot. Continue this incision across the whole leg. Repeat with all of the legs.

3. Connect the cut on each foot to the opposite foot, front foot to front foot and back foot to back foot. Start down at the cut you made connecting the front feet and slice up to the cut connecting the back feet. Continue past to the tail and be sure to cut around either side of the sex organs and anus. Separate the hide form the feet. Now pull the skin off of the legs and belly.

4. Pull the skin away from the cadaver where the tail meets the body. Stick your fingers through, making a space between the haunch and the pelt. Insert your knife with the dull side to the tip of the tail. Drag the knife up the to tip of the tail. Now slowly separate the tail from the hide.

5. Grab the hide and pull it down to the neck. It should only be attached at the spine and will come off easily. Before peeling the head cut along the gum line to separate the jaws from the the lips. This is a good time to cut the skin around the eyes as well. Then go to the back of the head and start turning the skin inside out, using your knife to cut the white connective tissue when necessary. Under the ears are two little chunks of cartilage; cut through these. Now, simply peel his face off, inverting it like a sock. The nose will be connected with a bit of cartilage. Trim this and the skin is free.

6. Scrape the hide. Start right above the neck. Make a shallow cut, without going through the skin, scraping off all the fat and gristle. Start with a few short strokes and the fat and flesh should come off easily.

7. If all the previous steppes seem too difficult, contact me and i'll do it for a small fee of 127$. (You are responsible for my meals, transportation and farting)
YOU COULD TAKE IT SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL AND THEY DO THAT STUFF AS A JOB,,,CAN YOU ACTUALLY SEE YOURSELF GUTTING AND SKINNING A RACCOON? ALL THAT BLOOD AND GORE THATS JUST NASTY,,,THROW IT AWAY OR SOMETHING
The wacks are out in full force today. Properly skinning an animal is a key component to succesful, humane, hunting.

To correctly answer the question, make a central cut up the abdomen. Make a cut along each extremety, then cut up to the chin and around the head.

Peel skin gently away and salt for 2 days before tanning.

Don't forget the meat! Coon and taters is fantastic!
