We own a rental property, and our tenant has a raccoon in the attic %26amp; has been getting down into her cupboard (no food, just storage cupboard). Yesterday we put a live trap %26amp; food in the attic %26amp; told the tenant to call us if she heard the raccoon having a fit because we thought that it would make noise. But today I've started wondering if maybe it doesn't even make a noise when it gets trapped. Should we check it today or just wait till tomorrow?Does a raccoon make a lot of noise when it gets trapped?
Anytime you use some kind of trap it should be checked daily, even if there is no noise.Does a raccoon make a lot of noise when it gets trapped?
The raccoon will not generaly make any noise, he's scared and can't find a way out. Nature dictates this as a vulnerable state and they quiet down and will stay trapped and quiet for quite a while. But if your using a live trap I assume you want to cause as little harm as possible to the 'coon so checking it daily will be a great way to reduce the stress of being trapped.
They are most active at twilight and dawn. If possible check in the morning when it comes to bed down for the day.
Always check a trap every day. I have had them make some noise once they saw me coming and they were in the trap. And it might rattle the cage around trying to get out. But it is unlikely to make too much of a fuss. I am glad you are taking it out alive. Just be sure to be careful when you let it go. They can be nasty when they are cornered. Stay behind the trap whet you open it. And make sure it is pointed towards an obvious open area where it can run away.
I have trapped plenty of coons in live box traps, and have never heard a noise out of a single one of them. I'd put the trap somewhere in the attic that would be easy to spot with a flashlight by just poking your head in there, and have the tenant look every morning if she can. Best of luck. And be sure to take him FAR away, not near other houses where he will be someone else's problem, and preferably where there are other coons around (you'll know by seeing dead ones along the road).
You definately should check it every day. It should make some sort of initial noise by tripping the trap or freaking out at first, but if you miss that it will just chill in the trap til you find it. Once it sees you coming at it, it should start hissing and going on again. A second reason is it might have rocked the trap to get the bait to a position it can just grab it and run before the trap springs.
your supposed to check it everyday, in the morning preferably and close to your entrance way, so you just need to flash a light there quick, if you don;t check everyday, it is animal abuse, seriously, people have been charged because they left a life animal in a trap, happens once in a while, sometimes with animal control too, get up there and check now before you decide to go too late and find one dead.
after trapping take it to a deserted woodland area, old logging road or lake far away from the city.
nope no noise at all
