You can deter raccoons by:
storing garbage inside a garage, basement or bin until the morning of pick up
sprinkling strong smelling repellents such as oil of mustard, naphtha flakes or ammonia in or around the composter and garbage
installing lights around compost and garbage storage areas
cleaning up after barbecuing 鈥?raccoons are attracted to grease drippings
fitting garbage and composters with tight lids and securing them upright
If none of these work, call your local animal shelter. They will provide you with a live trap. How do you get rid of a raccoon?
Earlier today I had a raccoon problem. Thanks to my new 22, im soon to have a vulture problem

Shoot it, no one has to know
I would contact animal control and see if they have some sort of trap you can set for it. raccoons are very smart. Last summer, I woke up to find that there were three of them on my patio working together to open my garbage can. They are also very mean when they are cornered and will attack you if they feel threatened. I wouldn't even let my dog go out. I simply put my garbage cans in my garage for about 2 weeks and they stopped coming around. But, maybe there is some sort of trap you can set for them and then once you have them animal control could pick them up.
If you don't have any other domesticated animals around, use something called ';fly bait';. You can get it at a tractor supply store and maybe at lowes I'm not sure. Coons love it and it will start choking them almost immediately after they eat it. If you have cats and dogs around that might get into it, then use a live trap instead. Put an egg in the trap because cats won't want it, but a coon will and it will be an easy catch.
Place mothballs in trash can or hang a mothball cake inside of can. The smell will deter them. I live in the woods and do this and have had no problems. Also you might want to install a wire cage around the trash cans. Raccoons are pretty strong so make sure you have a heavy lid or place a cinderblock on top of lid.
tell him you ';just want to be friends.';
Raccoon proof your trash cans, perhaps build a small cage like they do with bears
Trap it and move it to a more suitable place.
Cats tend to put them off.
If your objective is to keep them out of your trash
Get trash cans that have locking lids
or
Cover your trash cans with an enclosure - like a fenced in area with a ';top'; on it.
Very simple to make, basically a box with a hinged top and it kinda looks nice to hide the trash cans in :)
***Another Suggestion...
In addition to securing the trash cans
TRICK the little guy,
Go and buy some cheap dry cat or dog food
(about $10 for a big bag)
then somewhere far away from the trash cans put a bowl of food and water ( water because raccoons like to ';wash'; their food)
I guarantee the raccoon will stay out of the trash.
It won't eat tons of food the bag will probably last a year.
Give the little guy a break he's just living in his territory the best he can.
Another suggestion is to establish a ';compost pile '; in your back yard - put all your veggie peels and biodegradable ';trash'; in it. Thats is what the raccoons are after anyways and they will just stop by at night and go to the compost area and eat...then move on to someone elses trash cans- lol
Besides Raccoons means NO RATS /MICE because they eat them! :)
I prefer the raccoons to rats in my trash myself.
you can try either killing it, or, well, if you live next 2 woods, set a net, or trap. take the raccon to the forest. instead of emptying your trash 2 the trash people, leave it in the forest. raccoons eat that. you know that.
a ';live trap'; and relocate it to a wooded area away from your house or call animal controll after trapping to relocate it.
moth balls( 2 or 3 in bag) in the trash can works great, you will never see them again.
Wel first put ammonia in the areas whre he comes that will for sure kill him. Be sure not to leave food aound in your house cuz he will evntually come in your house and stay there.
Get a cage and put food in it and put it where ever the raccoon goes and that should work.
My parents had problems with raccoons who kept getting into the compost bin at night, although they even placed a large rock on the lid. Finally they figured out that if they left a slice or two of old bread on TOP of the bin, the raccoons were too lazy to open it up to search for more and went away satisfied. I think it is difficult to get rid of animals who are used to already coming there and live nearby. Maybe this will keep them from doing damage! Good luck!
