How do I catch a raccoon in my backyard?

There's a raccoon in our backyard that comes out at night and makes a big mess. How do I catch a raccoon in my backyard?
Ok dude. Check this out........ All you need is a 1-Trash Can, 2-18 in. Piece of Plie Wood. And Some Stinky Sardines ( OR Stinky Anything). Ok Its Kinda hard to explain but bare with me k......... Fill the Trash Can with a little bit of water And then throw the Stinky Stuff in it.But the trash can by a pick nick table or somthing a little bit shorter than the barrel or trash can. Then make a sort of bridge extending from the tabe half ( or a little less than half) way acrose the trash can.......... So the racoon will walk acrose the bridge and will peek over for the smelly sardines and then cause of his wate.... will fall straight in and the water will way down his corse fur making him incapeble to jump out........................ OK IT MIGHT NOT SEEM LIKE IT WORKS BUT TRUST ME IT DOES. THIS TRACES BACK TO MY REDNECK GRANPA.... WE USED TO DO IT ALLL THE TIME.... WE CAUGHT PROBOBLY 20 USING THAT METHOD........ eMAIL ME IF YOU NEED MORE HELP K. L8ER AND HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!!!!!How do I catch a raccoon in my backyard?
You can rent a live trap, catch him and move him AT LEAST 4 miles away. The deposit you put down for the trap will be returned when you return the trap. The raccoon needs to be moved at least 4 miles or it'll walk back. It also needs to be released near a water source such as a lake or river, and you need to do this before fall gets too far along so they know the territory. Early spring is already passed, so you don't have to worry much about babies (if this is a female).

Thing is, where there's one there's usually 8 or 9. You'd need to move the entire family. Do NOT move any possums, skunks or cats you may get in the trap, those are local, they don't cause the mess raccoons do, and the cats won't likely survive release in a new environment.
The best thing to do is to remove whatever is attracting it - then it won't have a reason to hang out in your yard and will move on. If you can't do that, then you might want to call professionals. Raccoons can carry a number of diseases that they can transmit to humans and to pets. They're also large enough and strong enough to do some serious damage if you happen to corner one, and raccoons that live near people generally aren't afraid of them. I won't mess with them, and I won't recommend messing with them to anyone else.
In most places it is illegal to trap wild animals and move them without a license. If you are caught, you face HEAVY fines.

You need to call a wildlife removal company to have them trap and dispose of the animal. If there is one raccoon, there may be more. The chances of you getting bitten are high if you do it yourself. Then they have to do rabies tests on the animal, and possibly start rabies treatment on you.

Yes it costs money, but better safe than sorry.
You can catch it, but will just keep having to do so. We have roaming hordes in our neighborhood, just get used to them. Most of ours are nearly tame, will walk right across the road in front of you, or stay on the porch eating cat food if any is left, while you stand there. They are actually quite cute and entertaining.
ok get a box trap and tuna. ok now open the tuna and put it in the back, if its double sided you dont have to open both sides now just wait, i caght 22 one month doing this it was 3 years ago and i have only seen one since now i just get cats and let em go just shot them b4 they bite u shoot it twice and then wait 30 minutes its better to damage a trap than 20 shots in the stomach and a scar
If you're not willing to shoot it on site, try using a trap. You can find small game traps at lots of stores like Fleet Farm etc.

Also, an older technique I've heard of is that they like shiny objects, and once they have a hold of something shiny, they won't let go. I've never seen this personally so I can't say it's 100% true, but maybe you could rig up some sort of hand trap to where if the animal grabs a shiny object, it will be unable to escape because his hand is stuck and can't pull it out. Be creative with that one....(Nails in a hole in a log, etc.)

Edit: hey buttwhipes, don't thumbs down me, I didn't make this up, havent you read Where the Red Fern Grows?

With a cage that you can purchase at a supply store. Bait it with corn or apples. When he goes in, the door will close and then you can move him to a different place.
Call Animal Control.
Contact the local animal shelter. They will know if there is a service for this type of animal in your area.
put your dog in the backyard. or but some food in a bag as bait and kill it .
