How do I keep a raccoon from getting into my attic?

When I was taking down X-Mas lights on my roof the other day I noticed a small hole on my roof. It was only @ 2 inches round and the shingle was torn apart. I know a raccoon did it. I hear them up there often. They live in an old abondened house next door, and they have dug a big hole in that roof where they live. How do I keep them from doing the same thing to my house?How do I keep a raccoon from getting into my attic?
Besides all the other suggestion for your question, try spreading some moth ball crystals around in your attic area. However, do not over do it with the crystals. You might also spread some of the moth ball crystals around the outside of your home to keep them away. I live in the country and use moth ball crystals to cure my problem with raccoons, squirrels, and those dreaded skunks getting into ';my'; space (under the house, in the attic, in the garage, garbage cans, etc.) Moth crystals are cheap and an inexpensive way to mark your boundaries!How do I keep a raccoon from getting into my attic?
Run an electric fence wire around your facia and the little bugger will learn right away it isn't very fun anymore.

Other than the previously mentioned solutions, you could purchase or borrow a live trap, bait it with sardines, and re-locate them yourself. One often touted preventative measure is to put mothballs in your attic. Mainly, be vigilant in keeping things sealed up as well, as squirrels are notorious for this as well.

you probably need to contact animal control (cheap) or a pest control company (costly) to trap and remove the population....you can trap them yourself but there are many area laws you may want to make sure you aren't violating by transporting them yourself...';city'; raccoons can carry canine distemper and if you take them to the woods were the population is not exposed to the disease it could wipe out the wild population ...many people do use moth balls to keep varmints out, but if you do use them place them in an old stocking rather than just throwing them about loosely, so that if the odor permeates into the home you can easily remove the problem
