How do you remove a raccoon from a chimney without harming it or it's young?

A raccoon has taken up residence in my chimney and I believe she has recently had a litter of young in the past week. I was planning on just smoking out the varmint by dropping small pieces of burning paper down the chimney, but now that she has young, I'm afraid she will abandon them if I were to do this. If she were to abandon her young, I'd be worried that the babies would starve to death, and dead baby varmints may produce an unwanted aroma, not to mention a more messy problem.

Any ideas? How do you remove a raccoon from a chimney without harming it or it's young?
Animal services will safely remove the critters and tend to the young as well. It is against their policy to harm any sane animals. If the coon in your house has rabies however, it is a danger to you and others and it would have to be put down. If you don't want to call animal services you can rent a trap and bait it with garbage and catch it yourself, then release far from your house. As far as the litter goes, they may not do well if taken from their birthplace and left without their mother. How do you remove a raccoon from a chimney without harming it or it's young?
Definitely call animal control. This is not something you should handle by yourself for the reasons that you mention above.
tear down the chimney carefully... it might cost a bit though
I just heard this on the radio this morning... you can use a hose or try to smoke them out....
Don't burn it out, as your home will smell up with dead coon smoke! Been there, done that! Stupid chimney company that we hired to remove it set it on fire!
call animal rescue in your town .. they can probably do this fairly simply...
Caution!!You can be charge big time.In some states and county's its illegal to harm,remove,ind-anger, pester, bait by poison or food,ect.ect.To any wild life, while the mother is caring and nursing her young. They have the temporary right to be there, until they leave,or the humane society decides otherwise.THIS applies here in CAN. also.Example last year we could not play the green on the sevens hole for three weeks, because a sand piper gave birth, and made there nest. Please check first, before being sorry you didn't. Hope this helps you out, Wildlife CO.
