in the yard next door there is this animal in the back yard and we can't figure out what it is. it sort of looks like a raccoon but it's tail is really long and bushy and it keep standing on its hind legs and eating from it's hands. it sort of looks like a raccoon but it's fatter. plus, why would a raccoon be out during the day?
any idea what it might be?
pictures would help!Is this a raccoon in the yard?
It could be.
But it might be a rat or a cat.Is this a raccoon in the yard?
Well, raccoons can be pretty darn fat, and they do have long, bushy tails, can stand on its hind legs, and eat from its hands. However, if it doesn't have a mask or rings on its tail, it could be a related species.
See if your library has Audobon's Field Guide to North American Mammals. It uses photographs, not drawings. Look up 'raccoon' in the pictures, and check the photos of related species. You should find what you're looking for.
Good luck!!
i dont think it is a racoon it could be a really young one but if it is fat it wouldnt have no stripes im not sure what it could be..my gmas neighbor has these kodamundi things that i thought looked like racoons..but i dont know why they would be out in the yard you should try taking a pic of it and ask again..this site has a pic of kodamundis their faces look alot different from a racoon but everything else looks alot the same

Where do you live? This would have helped your readers immeasurably.
I would take a gander at a book on wildlife native to your area and that should solve your dilemma.
